BABY #2 - THIRD TRIMESTER:
[symptoms, supplements + Must-haves]
It’s crazy to think that I’m already in the third trimester. At times this pregnancy seems to be going fairly slow, but then if I take a step back, it’s also like “dang.. it’s flying by” lol.
If you’re new to the blog — welcome! You can check out my first trimester post here, and my second trimester post here.
THIRD TRIMESTER SYMPTOMS
Insomnia:
I feel like I was completely thrown off by this because I never experienced anything close to this severe when I was pregnant with Bodhi. I thrive on getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night, and frankly, it is not pretty being around me when I’m sleep deprived, especially while pregnant + raising a toddler LOL.
The insomnia started around 32 weeks, and initially it was on and off. A couple nights I’d toss and turn feeling like I got no sleep, following by a night of good rest, etc. It slowly got worse around week 35 and I felt miserable — I just wanted to sleep! I had been trying numerous things: sleepy time tea, valerian root, lavender essential oil, eating cherries before bed, etc. Sometimes I felt like something would help, but then I would do the same exact thing the next night and I would sleep like crap.
FINALLY, at 37 weeks I was sleeping again!!! I’m not sure if it was a combination of things, but I cut out all naps during the day, and I started taking ZMA – a supplement that I’ll talk more about below!
**I added this in post-pregnancy as the insomnia unfortunately came back during the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy (Week 40 + 41… yes I went past 41 weeks if you didn’t already know lol). My midwife gave me some catnip tincture to try, and I do feel this helped a little bit. I only started taking it when I was close to 41 weeks as that’s when I saw her last. Luckily, the insomnia went away immediately after pregnancy! If you’re experiencing this, just know there’s (usually) a light at the end of this dark tunnel! Hang in there!
RIGHT LEG WEAKNESS:
This probably sounds a little odd, but after talking with my chiropractor, he said it has to do with my sciatica nerve. Luckily, I wasn’t getting any shooting pain like it typically causes, but it would cause major “weakness” in my right leg. It was typically random, but always when I was walking around. It felt like my leg went dead and very weak for about 10-20 seconds. My chiropractor stated it’s because of the weight, gravity shift, and all of the fluids that we hold while being pregnant. He suggested propping the leg up for a second when it happens and if it gets severe, to ice the lower right side of the back.
BLEEDING GUMS:
I also had this while pregnant with Bodhi, but I’d say it’s less severe this time around and it definitely came on much later in this pregnancy. I only notice it when I’m flossing and it’s really only between a few teeth. I was told when pregnant with Bodhi that this is a common pregnancy symptom (pregnancy gingivitis).
SYMPTOMS CONTINUED
Braxton Hicks COntractions;
I had these during the second trimester as well, but they are slowly becoming more frequent as I get closer to my due date.
Some Swelling in Feet:
Currently, 38 weeks as I type this, and knock on wood, I’ve only had like 2-3 days where my feet’s were sliiiightly swollen at the end of a long day. The could still become more swollen in the next couple of weeks, but fingers crossed it stays away! When pregnant with Bodhi, they swelled up quite a bit in the last month or so.
Anxiety:
This is a bit new for me. Of course I’ve had my worries and concerns leading up to labor and delivery, but in the last few weeks (37+ weeks) it seems that many anxious thoughts flood me mind on certain days. The good news is that they aren’t serious, as I voice them to Greg and he quickly diminishes them. They are more “silly” than anything, especially when I come back to them and laugh at how ridiculous they seem afterwards.
S U P P L E M E N T S
I continue to take the same ones that I did during the second trimester — prenatal vitamin, vitamin D, CBD, Ningxia Red, collagen, and Arbonne Greens.
As well as the following:
ZMA:
I probably wouldn’t have started taking this if it wasn’t for Greg. We had it in our supplement cabinet from when he bought it and took it a few times. It is supposed to help you sleep better amongst other things, and let me tell you, it has been my savior! As stated above under my insomnia, I had tried sooo many things, and this seems to be the only thing that is helping me. I spoke with my midwife prior, and she felt there was no reason that I shouldn’t be able to take it. It is a combination of Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin B6.

3ND TRIMESTER MUST-HAVES:
ZMA

Dates
I started eating dates when I was 36 weeks pregnant. I’m not sure how much it actually does, but it is said to help ripen the cervix for when labor arrives. Whether it does all that, I’m not sure, but I love me some dates, so I’m not complaining. Favorite way to snack on them: slap some almond butter on top + a piece of dark chocolate… You’re welcome.
O V E R A L L –
WEIGHT GAIN:
22 pounds
MENTAL STATE:
Exhausted. Eager. Excited. Positive.
WORKOUT REGIMEN:
Around 33 weeks, I started to slow down and take it easy more. Yoga feels best for me right now, and I probably take 2-4 classes a week, ranging from Hatha to Power Yoga. I also have been enjoying cycling classes on my Peloton Bike (currently 38 +2 days pregnant). I continue to keep doing yoga, cycling and the occasionally strength class as long as my body allows me to!
DIET:
This hasn’t changed much from the second semester. I try to listen to my body as much as possible, and get as many whole foods as I can into my meals throughout the day. I have noticed that I get a lot fuller faster, and typically no longer snack after dinner anymore as it holds me over until the morning.
We’re coming to the very last days before baby makes his/her arrival. We’re so eager to find out the gender, but really just to meet our sweet babe and become a family of 4!
As always, thank you all for sticking with me on this wild journey. Your support and love is appreciated always. More to come when baby gets here!!
Xoxo, Alyssa
