My second trimester:
[symptoms, supplements + must-haves]
Getting to the second trimester felt long. I think because we were so excited from the very beginning, which has only increased, that we wanted the days to fly by. Now looking back, especially writing this after the second trimester, it’s definitely safe to say that it really has flown by. Man, it is crazy to think that my due date is only a few months away. Craaaazy.
So, here we go… all of the second trimester details comin’ atcha.
SECOND TRIMESTER SYMPTOMS:
Cravings
I have been craving fruit, (mainly watermelon + pineapple), sauerkraut + kimchi. I’m not sure what it is, about any of these, but they are stocked in the fridge at (almost) all times. I think I’ve been loving watermelon and pineapple so much because they’re deliciously sweet, and very refreshing in this heat. I’ve always had a huge sweet tooth, and I basically need something sweet after every meal. Yes, that includes breakfast! The sauerkraut and kimchi is a little comical, especially to Greg, as I’ve never eaten as much in my entire life as I have during this pregnancy. As a matter of fact, I never tried kimchi until I was pregnant. It tastes somewhat similar to sauerkraut which I’ve had before pregnancy and enjoyed. I not complaining though, because they’re both healthy snacks and full of probiotics for healthy digestion! Heck yes.
Side note: I did write about these cravings in the beginning of the 2nd trimester, and now, as I’m at the end of it, I have noticed that these specific cravings have definitely decreased. I no longer crave sauerkraut and kimchi, however I still love alll the fruit – mainly watermelon.
Headaches
These kind of came out of nowhere, and they come and go randomly. Some weeks I won’t experience any at all, while at times I’ll have one just about everyday. They are more of the annoying kind that just don’t seem to go away. Some nights I would fall asleep with one and still have it when I wake up. That was the worst. Knock on wood, they’ve stayed away since the beginning of the second trimester and hopefully it continues that way! I’ve definitely ensured that I’m drinking plenty of water which may be helping.
Insomnia
In my opinion this is one of the most frustrating and hardest symptoms that I struggle with. I pride myself on getting enough sleep lol especially now that I’m pregnant as I know it’s so vital. So when I started having a hard time with this, it was very difficult for me to deal with it. I knew having trouble sleeping is a common symptom during pregnancy, but I more so expected it later on during my 3rd trimester when my belly would be a lot bigger (assuming it would make it more difficult to get comfortable). Some nights it felt like I never fell into a deep/REM sleep until a couple hours before I had to get up – I would toss and turn the majority of the night.
Now, as the second trimester has come to an end, I honestly think the anxiety and stress that I was unawarely putting on myself about getting enough sleep was making it all worse. When I got that under control and tried to just ‘let it happen’, I started sleeping much better. I also got more tired as the second trimester went on, especially the last few weeks, so by the time 8:30pm rolled around, I was ready to get in bed and hit the hay.
Lower Back Aches/Pains
These are not too severe, and I hope that they don’t get any worse, although I won’t be surprised if they do as the belly is only going to continue growing, placing more pressure and strain on my lower back. I have been going to the chiropractor which I can tell has definitely been helping, and I plan to continue doing so regularly throughout this pregnancy. I was seeing the same chiropractor beforehand and will continue to do so after pregnancy. It seriously makes a huge difference for me when I get adjusted and when everything is aligned — I sleep better, less aches/pains, better digestion, etc.
Less Bladder Control
Say what? Uh huh. Feel a sneeze coming on? Ya better prepare your lady parts, squeeze tight (think kegel ladies) and pray that you don’t have a full bladder, otherwise, yep, you’re peeing yourself. Sometimes a lot. Sometimes just a little. Either way, by the end of the second trimester, I masted the ‘squeeze and sneeze’ method. Well, almost. But hey, it’s pretty normal and common, so no worries. It is what it is!
SYMPTOMS CONTINUED:
Pregnancy Gingivitis
AKA swollen and bleeding gums. If there’s one piece of advice that I would give about the dentist and pregnancy, it would be to get everything squared away before getting pregnant (if possible). This meaning, make sure you’re getting your regular cleanings and try to get any dental work (fillings, crowns, etc.) done beforehand. In my case, I didn’t do this – well, I intended to and had my appointment scheduled to get my cavities filled, but I ended up pregnant and had to postpone the appointment until I was in the 2nd trimester, as most places will not do any dental work in your 1st or 3rd trimesters. I got all my cavities filled in the 2nd trimester – local anesthesia will not harm the baby – and everything was fine, except now I get to experience the beloved swollen and bloody gums when I brush/floss. This isn’t throughout my entire mouth, just a few areas here and there. It doesn’t hurt or cause any pain, although I’ve heard in some cases it can get sore, but in my case, it’s more annoying, as in one area there is a lot of blood and it sometimes take a bit for it to stop.
Edit: Come to find out, I actually developed a “pregnancy tumor”, or the fancy word they use – pyogenic granuloma. This was what was causing the bleeding when I would floss and brush my teeth, no matter how gentle I was. The removal process was fairly quick and almost painless (thanks to local anesthesia). Thankfully now it is gone, along with the bleeding (!!!) and I’m just hoping that it doesn’t come back (which in majority of cases it doesn’t).
Constantly Snacking!
I mean.. Come on. Who doesn’t love snacks? Especially a pregnant woman… I swear I always have to have a snack in my hand (not literally, but if gaining an unhealthy amount of weight wasn’t an issue, I’d be all about it lol). I do however never leave the house without at least 3-4 snacks. My current favorites are: Perfect Bars, Chomps beef or turkey sticks, Sumo oranges, apples, mixed nuts, Trader Joe’s chia seed or hemp seed snack bars, and dark chocolate.
Feeling winded/out of breath with small tasks
This one makes me laugh a little lol. Sometimes just walking up the stairs makes me feel like I climbed a mountain. Or when Greg and I go on walks, I notice I’m breathing heavier than normal, especially when holding a conversation. This has only continued to increase as the weeks have gone by. Again, this is normal as our bodies are already working extra hard, pumping more blood and getting plenty of oxygen to baby.
Nosebleeds (still)
Same as first trimester. Lately it has been a little worse, which I partially think may have to do with the weather changes. If you missed the first trimester post, you can find it here!
S U P P L E M E N T S
I continue to take the same ones as I did during the first trimester – prenatal vitamin + collagen peps, daily.
As well as the following:
Rasa Coffee Alternative and Matcha []when desired]]
I stumbled across Rasa Coffee from an online ad, and it had great reviews so I opted to try it. Pre-pregnancy, I never drank coffee regularly, just when I was craving it, but I personally have chosen to stay away from high amounts of caffeine during this pregnancy. I don’t need it, and I feel best without a lot of it. Rasa really is delicious, and it’s actually not coffee at all. It’s made of natural herbs, adaptogens and spices, giving it a lush coffee flavor, all while being caffeine free. I drank this more in the beginning of the second trimester, and from then on I’ve been hooked on and solely wanting my iced matcha.
Valerian Root [[as needed]]
This I have only take a few times and it was towards the beginning of the second trimester when I was having a really hard time sleeping. It is a natural herb that is supposed to help aid sleep. I found it to work for me fairly well, but again, I have not needed to take it in over a month or two. As always, speak with your doctor or midwife before taking any supplements as everyone is different. This is what worked for me.
My 2nd Trimester Must-Haves:
Pregnancy Pillow
Heck yes. My dear friend, Jenna, got me this one in my first trimester, and it has been in my bed and under my head every night since. I was skeptical for the first few nights as I couldn’t get too comfortable, but that changed verrry quickly. It’s all I use now. It’s C-shaped and can be used in many ways and different positions to your own liking. In my opinion it’s the perfect firmness. It isn’t super soft, but also not super firm. And the cover that comes with it is amazing – the fabric is so smooth and soft.
Snacks (at all times)
Self explanatory, people. See above under ‘constantly snacking’ for my current favorites.
Baobei Maternity Leggings
These are wonderful. I originally bought them in the first trimester but definitely realized the benefits a lot more in the second trimester. The leggings have a waist band that covers the entire belly and provides awesome support. I wear them around the house, to run errands, to the gym, etc. They are super comfy and come in a few different colors. I now also own numerous products from Baobei (will talk more about in third trimester post), and they are all amazing! I seriously cannot say enough good things.
Lululemon Align Leggings
The holy grail of leggings. I shit you not. If you do not own a pair, pregnant or not, you are missing out. When people say they feel like BUTTA, they ain’t lyin! Seriously, they are pricier, but coming from someone who tries to bargain and save money with a lot of things, these are worth the splurge. I buy the 7/8 length and they are perfect for me, sitting an inch or two above the ankles (I’m 5’5 for reference.) I have a pair of regular length Lulu’s, and I have to roll them up a lot or else the would basically cover my entire foot – which when I’m doing yoga, I don’t mind, but if I want to wear them out, it’s slightly annoying to fix/adjust every time.
Peppermint Roll-On Stick
This helped tremendously with the headaches. A natural remedy consisting of mainly peppermint oil. I roll some on my temples, across my forehead and behind my ears as needed. I have this one from Amazon and love it.
Toxic-Free Deodorant
Corpus Natural is my absolute favorite at the moment. Non-toxic, naturally derived, vegan. Greg loves it too – we both use it. It smells fantastic, and IT WORKS. I’ve tried a few other natural deodorants before, and I was never fully satisfied. I honestly rarely wear deodorant, however through the pregnancy and with all of the fluctuating hormones, there are times when I STINK lol and this product is/continues to be my go-to whenever needed.
Comfy Shoes
My feet start to hurt easily now if I’m standing or walking around for a good bit, so comfy shoes are key! I see pictures of some pregnant women in 6inch heels, and I can only wonder how they do it.. You go girl. More power to ya!
O v e r a l l –
WEIGHT GAIN: 12-14 pounds (18 pounds overall)
MENTAL STATE: Clear! Happy! Enthused! As the weeks go by, especially towards the end of the second trimester I have definitely become more tired, physically. Mentally, I’ve only become more eager and excited to meet our little peanut. The days/weeks/months really are flying by, and it’s crazy to think we are only 2.5-3 months away from meeting him!
EXERCISE REGIMEN: For the most part, it has been the same as the first trimester. Towards the end of the second trimester I haven’t made it to the gym as much, and opted for more workouts at home as well as more walks outside before/after work with Greg. My main focus and goal has been to continue being active and get some type of movement in every day if I can. I do what feels good for my body and listen to any cues that are not comfortable or enjoyable.
DIET: This again has been the same overall, plus maybe more ice cream. Again, striving for balance and listening to what my body wants and needs, always.
THE END!
Kidding… well, kind of. The end of the 2nd trimester at least lol. Overall it was a smooth trimester, and I’m grateful to now be in the third. We’re super eager for Baby L to get here!
As always, thank you for the amazing support.
Stay tuned for the 3rd Trimester Updates blog post! But be patient as I’m sure it won’t get posted until after he gets here. 🙂
Xoxo, Alyssa
